We'll Miss You! ...

... Travis Snider was sent down to AAA after yesterday's game.

I still believe he will be a superstar! And this is just a little blip in a soon-to-be great career. So, Travis, go down to Vegas, grow your awesome mustache, maybe play a little blackjack and be super. I'll be waiting with eager anticipation for your super-duper return!

Come back soon!! For now, we can all follow Snider's progress here!

Gabe Gross!!!!11

Apparently he is retiring to spend more time with with the family.
Good luck Gabe! You were always better then Rios!

EPSN's Baseball Today podcast had a shout out to him (Keith Law) ...

Monday, April 11, 2011

NOOOOO!

... the wonder mustache of Travis Snider is gone!

I want to see it back!

Saturday, April 09, 2011

Bullshit ...

... yes, Bob Davison's interference call (in the 13th? I think) was bullshit. Stole the game from the Jays.
Move over C.B. Bucknor, there is a new jerk-ass umpire in town.

The Future ...

... has work to do.

But I was impressed with the start none-the-less. No because of the numbers.

His line:
6 IP, 6H, 2 R (1 earned), 4BB, 5 K

The walks are a little concerning. But it was the start that impressed me. He kept the Jays in the game to give them the opportunity to win the game (which they did). He didn't have his best stuff but fought through it and showed a lot of composure.

I can't say this enough, but "The Future" is bright. Go Jays!

The Double Down

According to those who are immune chicken pox KFC's Double Down is the cause of high cholesterol and high sodium. So all you lovers of the double down and advocates its glorious return ... watch out for what you wish for. It causes bad things.

Since I have posted this to the Internet. it must be true. I'm off to update Wikipedia. HAHA.

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

Huh ...

.... I guess you can be immune to the chicken pox.

Crystal is. I guess she proved me.

Tuesday, April 05, 2011

The Future! ...

... is now.

Drabek's first start of the season was a dandy!

7.0 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 ER.

And we won.

Now, let's take a look at Roy Halladay's line first win as a Jay ...
9.0 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 ER.

That looks similar. My take, Drabek will be just as good a Halladay :)

Predictions!

... Its baseball's Opening Day today! Here are my prediction for the Blue Jays this year.

The Blue Jays will finished with 83 wins this year. Yes, they finish just above .500. And they will finish 4th in the AL East. The division will finish as follows: Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays, Devil Rays, Orioles.

Some fun player predictions:
  • Kyle 'The Future' Drabek will finish with a modest 13 wins
  • Dustin McGowan will make it back to the big club in July (coming out of the bullpen)
  • Brett Lawrie will get the call in mid-June
  • Vernon Wells will NOT win the Triple Crown this year
  • Travis Snider will hit 27 HRs and be healthy for the season
  • JoBau will hit 33 HRs (and drive in 107 RBIs)

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Vancouver Canucks ...

... are the greatest team this year.

They have clinched the Western Conference title BEFORE ANY of the other teams have clinched a playoff spot! Detroit has 98 points and still has not clinched a playoff spot. I guess this is more attributed to the fact that the Western Conference is ridiculously close from like 4th - 10th).

Its going to be too bad if they meet up with the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, as the Canucks have had difficulty with the young 'Hawks team in the past (plus they are 2-2 in regular season play).

E5 is back!

... While trolling the Internet I have learned this awesome tid-bit of information:

Edwin 'E5 formerly E3 formerly E5' Encarnacion is back at 3rd base and JoBau is going back to RF. (http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/29/blue-jays-settle-on-jose-bautista-in-right-field-and-edwin-encarnacion-at-third-base/)

This sort of puzzles me because, where is Juan Rivera going to start? DH possibly? Is he hurting (leg injury)? Or maybe they are going to deal him for an actual 1st baseman? Does AA have a crazy deal up his sleeve? Maybe E5 will actually be good defensively ... oh wait, I should put down my beer(s) and sleep on that thought.

The Future is NOW!!!!111

... oh yes it is!!!

Kyle "The Future" Drabek is breaking spring training with the big club!!!!111

THE FUTURE IS NOW! And I will say now, he will pitch a perfect game some day!!!!11

I just hope to be there when he does it!

Just like Vernon Wells will one day win the Triple Crown.

McGowan Relief ...

... yes. Our favourite baseball player Dustin McGowan is moving into a relief role!

This is to limit the number of pitches he throws for his comeback! My expectations, we'll be seeing number 29 in big leagues some time in June ... maybe July - just in time for that playoff run! PLAYOFFS!!!!!!111 - And after they deal Francisco, Rauch and several other relievers for prospects

Tom Brady ...

... is such a copycat.
About 4 years after I cut my hair*, Tom Brady, now, is sporting an excellent pony tail too! Check out the photos here:

Just makes me think that I'm way ahead of the curve. Just think, Tom Brady will soon be wearing Futurama t-shirts with collared t-shirts. Or maybe he'll watch The Wrong Guy and think its the funniest movie ever. Cuz it is the funniest movie ever.

Oh, aside of Tom Brady's awesome pony tail, Travis Snider is sporting an awesome mustache:

He has even tweeted about it!

I support you and your effort to grow a glorious 'tashe! Don't give up!

*which I really should still have it because the Leafs have yet to make the playoffs since I made that proclamation where I wouldn't cut my hair until they were knocked out the playoffs (ie. they have to make the playoffs to get knocked out) but we don't talk about this.

Perfection ...

... I have achieved it (In capping bottles that is).

Yesterday in bottling the Chocolate Stout (now known as Perfect Chocolate Stout), I capped 88 bottles with exactly 88 caps. Not one cap ruined. Perfect.

The rest of the brew day went really well ... actually perfect.

I now know how Roy Halladay felt when he pitched his perfect game. Haha.

McGowan Update ...

Its been awhile since we've heard of "the man with the golden arm." The greatest Blue Jay pitching prospect ever.

The Globe and Mail has a recent article about him and Scott Richmond. "McGowan, Richmond face uncertain future." He is back and although there is no timeline for his great return ... I think he'll be on the opening day roster! 5th starter! Just think of the awesome rotation, Romero, Morrow, Cecil, the Future, McGowan!!

I believe McGowan will be back sooner then later! You heard it here first.

According the blogspot dashboard, this is about the 100th post.

Welcome to post 100!

Anderson Cooper ..

The funniest movie ever ...

... The Wrong Guy starring Dave Foley.

I've seen this movie at least 20 times and every time its just as funny as the first time I saw it.

This is the funniest movie I've ever seen. You should go out and see it - if you can find it.

Friday, January 21, 2011

Oh Vernon ...

... how I will miss you. You had heart. You are one of the classiest baseball players I have even known.

I will keep you on my fantasy team and I believe you are a 30-100 guy. Plus, you are a really nice guy. Who the fuck is going to play centre now!?

Sunday, January 09, 2011

Vince Carter ..

... is going to come back and play for the Toronto Raptors. I've been saying this for a while now. Just ask my brother, Greg or Adam.

And it will be epic.

Mark my word, Vince Carter will be back! (And lead the Raptors to the 2nd round of the playoffs).

Just kidding. But I found this little tidbit from the Beckett blog (the sports card valuation company). But I think this is pretty funny. We have Escobar ... and Jeter is a chump.

We lost, but we could have won. 1 more day.

G20 Summit Conspiracy.

I feel bad for Toronto. All that vandalism, all those crazy people running around smashing everything, all for nothing. Yes, I'm a conspiracy theorist. I believe in the 'no bullet theory', JFK's head just did that (thank you 'Wrong Guy' for opening up my eyes). As for the G20 summit, it was never in Toronto. It actually was in South Africa. Why? 2010 FIFA World Cup! As this globalandmail article states:
"There were no glimpses of U.S. President Barack Obama or his wife, Michelle. Low-flying helicopters and quickly moving motorcades were the only indication of VIPs, and there were no reports of celebrity sightings or delegate events."
It just very sad. As for the protesters, I really feel sorry for them. The vandalists completely ruined their message. Why? As soon as one person smashes a window, the media will jump on it like a dung beetle on cow manure. All I learned from the G20 protests was that there are some real fucking idiots out there and I really do not know what you are all protesting. All I know is that there was a ton of arrests and lots of smashed windows (and the Eaton Centre was locked down). Were you protesting for funding for abortions for Africa? Were you protesting the global bank tax? Were you protesting those new 'Look at My Eye Change Cars' from Mattel? I simply don't know! Its just a very sad sad show.

The Toronto Police should be commended for the job they did. Their response was far more measured and fair then mine. Frankly, if I was in charge, once one fucking idiot vandalizes a store, all bets are off. I would have been arresting anyone and everyone with their face covered, and dressed in full black. Why? Well, if you want your voice heard, when wouldn't you want people to know that YOU support it and you believe in it? They only reason why you would want to hide your identity is if you are a fucking vandalizing idiot. So, 'black bloc', congratulations on screwing over your fellow protesters.

It just too bad that no one was actually there, they were all in South Africa watching the U.S. fall to mighty Ghana, Germany crushing English and Argentina knocking off Mexico. Hehe.

Day 27

Today Crystal and I went shopping.

I got some Rafa Nadal pants.

Thursday, June 24, 2010

Day 25.

Happy Birthday Chris!

He IS 1 of the estimated 3 people who read this!

Stupid knees.

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Day 20.

Today, I learned that you do not need to really train for a 10k, especially if you expectations are low!

There is a lot of things to check.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Day 15.

So, I missed a couple of days. I hope all 3 of you who read this didn't miss me.

But I've been tres busy! Playing slo-pitch (driving in 4 runs and hitting it to the grass - all I need to do is catch one more ball without screwing up and I can retire), setting up the mortgage, getting insurance approval, crap like that.

Tomorrow is house inspection day ...

Greg finished his lamp! Go original craft night, none of this BS craft night that UW copied from 178A! Yes, that's right I'm calling you and your little hippie UW friends out Sarah.

Wow, the picture is much bigger image then I expected.

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Day 12.

To Toronto!

Happy Birthday Chris! Happy Birthday Lee!
Happy House Warming Chris & John!

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Day 10.

Played baseball tonight.

We won by a run! With some great defense. Got a lot of hits. Its nice to play a team that is at our level!

Oh, Crystal and I bought a house. Houses are expensive.

Day 9.

Is it Friday yet?

Work, work, work. But I slept in today ... so more like sleep, sleep, work.

Tuesday, June 08, 2010

Day 8.

Gah! Its Tuesday. I wish it was Friday.

Went to the eye specialist and got those annoying drops in my eyes.
Bought Bender a Blizzard for driving me.

June is becoming very annoying with busyness. I need a day off.

Saturday, June 05, 2010

Day 5.

Hello Day 5.

Day 5 was filled with lots of road action. Meaning, I drove a lot. It was my niece (Rei) and nephew's (Kai) birthday parties! In the quaint city of Strathroy.

Kai is left-handed. Awesome. Lefties rule the world.

Friday, June 04, 2010

Day 4.

Its Friday! Weekend is here!

The Slo-pitch tournament is this weekend. Tonight was game one. We lost, but I hit the ball hard ... right to the shortstop. I consider it a victory.

Thursday, June 03, 2010

Day 3.

Got really drunk. Bowled a really shitty game.
I hate Gordon.

Bender is probably doing yoga right now ... haha.

Wednesday, June 02, 2010

Day 2.

Welcome to Day 2.

On day 2, Bender and I went to the Pita Factory for lunch. He is doing a month of yoga and I'm doing a month of blogging. He talked about sweating, it was gross. There is much less sweating in blogging.

Molly's had cheap domestic pitchers for $10.50 and spaghetti with meatballs for $8.99 today. What a deal!

It was raining, so I couldn't go for a run after work. But I did go grocery shopping. Its a barrel of excitement here!

Tuesday, June 01, 2010

Day 1.

Welcome to 30 days of Keizo's life. Day one.

Bad News Everyone ....

... the Box network screws us over again!

Yes, its wonderful that Futurama is coming back. But the Box network is the production company behind the new episodes on Comedy Central. And they are screwing us over again ... why? They are currently having auditions to replace the original voices (Bill West, Katey Sagel, John DiMaggio, the great Tress MacNeille, and Polka-a-dot door alumi Phil LeMarr).

All of the original cast have refused the offer from the Box network. I guess Box can't keep on screwing over Futurama, like they did when you actually couldn't find it at a regular time slot on Sundays.

Box sucks.

Update: Good news everyone. Reports are that the entire cast (including Polka Dot Door alumni Phil LaMarr) have signed on! Yay!

The American Influence on Canadian Politics ...

... goes beyond the election tactics.

In recent elections (I guess over the past 10 - 15 years), the tone of elections has changed. Changed for the worst, less about policy more about attack the leader of the party. Do you want this man leading Canada/Ontario? This is probably the result of the American elections. Attack your opponent! Call into question everything, and nothing is off-limits (except for family).

But there is something else that the American system has done to Canadian politics. It is no longer about the MP who represents you; however, the leader of the party. This is a direct result of Canadians seeing Bush or Clinton or Obama being elected as the leader of the nation. The face of the nation. People now have to understand that when they vote, they should be voting for their representative and NOT the leader of the party. The party leader isn't going to do anything for you, but your MP should.

Furthermore, the influence of American politics isn't solely based on voter perspective, but now, the leaders of the party. Harper is strong willed and a non-nonense, I don't take shit from anyone, if you don't vote the way I want you to, not only will I kick you out of my caucus, but I will beat you down so hard that you will never ever be in a political somebody again type of leader. Sound familar? No? Well, look at Jean Chretien, he was the same way, party members have to tow the party line ALL the time, even if its against the wishes of the very people they represent. Need more evidence, Brian Mulroney - although, I feel that he was less abrasive. He had tight control on their MPs. Perhaps the Conservatives were better at hiding it.

Perhaps the importance of the leader the evolution of the party system in Canada, but having the leader, be so brash and bold, so wanting to leave their mark on Canada and how Canada should look in their own eyes ... that s/he never takes a second thought that maybe (just maybe) its not what's good for the country.

Who Said Canadian Politics isn't Interesting ....

... Well, I think I did - actually, I know I did several times, on several different occasions - repeatedly.

If you don't know, Canadian politics is really interesting right now. The Liberals and NDP have formed a coalition and requested the Governor General that there is a viable alternative government in the House with the confidence of the majority of Canadians. Why did this happen? I'll get into that in a later post. Short story, I believe its all about money and Harper's big ego.

But right now, I have an image in my head, it has Dion, Layton and Harper in a car, screaming towards a cliff and the 3 of them are fighting over the steering wheel. Oh wait, can't forget about Elizabeth May, she just jumped into the car with her support of the coalition government and apparent request for a Senate seat with a Cabinet position!

Rick Ankiel ...

... the start of another baseball season! Its exciting. What is more exciting is Rick Ankiel! The former starter turned outfielder!

He 'lost' it in the playoffs a few years back where he threw like 9 wild pitches in an inning. So, he gave up pitching and started to work on his hitting. Now, he is an outfielder and he is starting everyday in St. Louis!

Today he was batting clean up too! Man, I wish he could still pitch. Then every 5th day he would take the mound as a pitcher and bat like clean up or something crazy like that. The other 4 days? He would start in the outfield. That would be some old skewl awesomeness. But alas, he isn't gong to be taking the mound anytime soon - probably only in emergency situations (ie. like 18+ inning games).

My Obsession ...

... For those who don't know me, I collect toys. Its rather silly. I'm obsessed with the little diecast Pixar Cars. They have recent released a new 'series' where they have actually numbered each of the cars. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to FIND a list of all of the cars to give me an idea on how many there are!

Through about 2 or 3 hours of work, I've come up with a list. I would really like to keep an updated list; however, I'm not sure if blogspot can actually store just files. It would be handy then people can just look it up really quickly.

But there are a couple of problems, there are some of the toys have only been released in packs (Movie Moments and value packs).

The other problem that I have is that Mattel hasn't released any of the Pixar Cars Playsets here in Canada. I didn't know about them until a few months ago.

I think I'm going to end up spending a lot of money. But I think it'll be ok, because spending money is what keeps the economy going ... and the U.S. can really use it.

Enchanted ...

.... I love this movie.

Go and watch it. You'll be happy that you did!

Canadian Politics ...

A few people have mentioned to me that I talk about American politics quite a bit more. Frankly its because there is an election going on down there and essentially its an 11-month election from start to finish. But, here is an entry about our Canadian politics.

The Globe and Mail article, "Ontario set to become 'have-not' province: Flaherty" basically says that Ontario will soon need the support of the rest of Canada. Equalization payments will (eventually - maybe) made to the most populous province. If you think about it, Flaherty is right. With the strong Canadian dollar (against the U.S. Greenback) and the looming recession in the States, its no surprise that Ontario will begin to struggle with its heavy, heavy dependence on manufacturing. This is just yet another volley in the bickering between Ontario and Ottawa. Honestly, I'm siding with Flaherty. Flaherty makes comments earlier that Ontario should cut its corporate taxes. McGuinty complained that there just isn't enough money to do that. Well, that maybe true, but if you CUT taxes, more businesses will come to Ontario and thus you won't lose as much as last year's books would indicate. A little short term pain for long term gain. That's the problem with McGuinty, he seems to be way to short sighted. The thing is that huge deficits became all the rage in the late 90s and early 00s. Then shorted sighted governments passed a law saying deficits should be illegal. This really just handcuffs governments only to look to the very short term. Allowing small (not excessive) deficit spending is a necessity even in the business world.

One of the major sticking points between the federal and Ontario governments, is government assistance for manufacturing companies. Governments have no business in bailing out the manufacturing sector, especially the auto industry (that's an entirely different post). Why should the Federal government bail out (potentially) poorly run businesses? Or companies that are making things people cannot currently afford? The economy will right itself, companies will still manufacture products and there will still be jobs (perhaps not as many, but there will still be jobs). This isn't Ottawa's problem. This isn't a government problem. In times of down turn (which we are rapidly approaching or currently in the midst of), the companies that do survive not only build better products but build them more efficiently. Thus better for international competition. What would people think if oil and gas prices plummeted and the government stepped in and bailed out them out? People would just ask why and say its not justified. They made billions and billions of dollars 'gauching' us already, they don't need it. Its a matter of perspective.

Michigan and Florida ...

... What? You want your cake and eat it too!?

I'm talking about the Democrat Primaries in the U.S. Earlier this year, these two states decided (against the Democrat National Party's wishes) to hold their Primaries 'early', before Super Duper Tuesday (February 5th, 2008). Michigan held their Primary on January 15, 2008 and Florida held theirs on January 29th, 2008. The consequences? Their delegates that they send to the National Convention in August, do NOT get a say. Why did these states do this? I would assume because they wanted to have a 'bigger say' in the selection of the Democrat's presidential nominee. However, in doing this, they got nothing. And what happened? Well, Clinton and Obama are deadlocked in a tight race for the nomination. Not, only did they lose their delegate votes at the convention, but really they had no say or influence in the race.

There should be NO re-vote. It is THEIR fault for holding their primaries early. They knew what the consequences were. This is simply giving both Michigan and Florida what they have always wanted, a bigger say in the selection of the Presidential nominee. That is was the initial reasoning behind moving up their primaries. They had their primaries, they broke the rules, they have to live with the consequences of the rules they broke.

This Winter ...

.... I'm sick of it. I'm quite ready for spring. I was ready for spring three weeks ago.

Yet another storm, yet another 15 cm of snow. On the bright side, looks like I won't be leaving my apartment this weekend.

Bad Canada ...

... The Republican nominee for President is John McCain. Hooray. This should have happened 8 years ago. On the Democrats sides, its even more up in the air. HIlary managed to squeak out wins in Ohio and Texas. No thanks to the Canadian Foreign Affairs office. Yes, Canada has meddled in the American democratic process.

For those who don't know, someone in the Canadian government leaked a memo to the Clinton campaign, that there was a meeting with Obama's advisers regarding the NAFTA issue. The memo essentially stated that Obama's position on renegotiations is simply posturing and should be taken with a grain of salt. Essentially, the memo screwed over Obama in Ohio where NAFTA is a huge issue. Furthermore, it allowed Clinton to tighten up the race and have the Democrats continue to fight in the late April.

This is bad. Really bad. This is probably the worst thing a foreign government could do to another country. Its like Bush coming to Canada and saying that he supports Stephen Dion for Prime Minister in the next general election. Now, that would really change the political landscape. Support for Dion would probably take a hit because everyone hates Bush.

There is one positive. Its nice to know that Obama knows where Canada is ...

I hope people start to notice.

And Some More News ...

... Again, the Globe and Mail has another article about diabetes. "Pancreatic stem cells discovered in mice" outlines that researchers have found stem cells in the pancreas and under 'abnormal injury' they coaxed these cells into turning into beta cells. Of course, again, its in mice. I believe this is good, because if I have stem cells in the pancreas that can create beta cells, then there would be no need to autoimmune suppressing drugs. Activating it is what is the problem. Again, this would be a treatment, and not a cure, since there doesn't address the root of the problem.

I have always wondered why there isn't more research or money spend on curing the root cause of the disease. Shouldn't most of the efforts be put towards that? Or even fast-tracked for people? I've looked at the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and I see alot of money being thrown towards better 'treatments' such as the artificial pancreas project, beta cell transplantation, beta cell regeneration. They all don't solve the root cause, they are just more treatments. Instead of injecting insulin multiple times a day, I go and get a transplant or I continually have something stuck in me.

News organizations are all gun-ho for stem cells and its exciting and new. Its like if there is some sort of news nugget about stem cells, the mass media are all over it. I'd really like to see the bulk of any research money go to curing the root cause of the problem, instead of treatments. Once if you fix the root cause, then you can look at replacement/regeneration. What if you stop the autoimmune disease, and the body automagically creates beta cells again? Then all of that money for regeneration/replacement therapy is sort of wasted. So, how about we figure out what is causing the body to hate itself and then figure out a way to regeneration/replace beta cells?

Spring Training ...

.... started on Saturday with pitchers and catchers officially reporting in. But the most non-Dustin Gowan Blue Jay news of the day is that Shannon Stewart is back in the Jays' organization.

How exciting. You may remember him from the early 00s, where he was the staple leadoff hitter for the club. He would usually average around .300 and was called the Jays' best 'pure hitter'. Reed Johnson, you better watch out!

Sundin's Decision ...

... For what its worth, I really really respect Mats Sundin. I'm a big fan of him. He has always been a classy guy (except for that little stick throwing incident a few years ago).

Yesterday, Sundin declared that he will not waive his no-trade clause. Thus, sticking with the Maple Leafs. This guy truly bleeds blue-and-white. I like this decision. He says, that he doesn't believe in rental players. You know what, he is truly a guy who has seen it fail time and time again. Over the last few years, the Maple Leafs have been so desperate to win (or I guess more like make it to the playoffs) that they would deal away their young players for 'rentals.' Although, the Owen Nolan wasn't really a rental; however, he had a year left on his contract and then there was the lockout, so the Leafs only got like a year out of him, while trading away Brad Boyes and Alyn McCauley.

Here is hoping Sundin plays into his 40s, because the Leafs aren't going to get close to a cup for another 5 years. But I still respect him.

Book Review: Cheating Destiny

Here is my next book review, "Cheating Destiny: Living with Diabetes, American's Biggest Epidemic" by James S. Hirsch. This is an excellent book. I highly recommend everyone read this. Not just diabetics or loved ones of diabetics, but everyone.

Hirsch was diagnosed with diabetes when he was a teenager and has lived with it for 29 years. This is an excellent novel. It starts out with his son and his own diagnosis of type-1 diabetes (at the tender age of 4). The novel goes through the history of diabetes. Each chapter addresses various aspects of diabetes. Topics he touches are diabetes in the deep south, history of insulin, the U.S. health care system, Dr. Bernstein's Solution on normalizing blood sugars, Dr. Denise Faustman ('maverick' doctor who has cured type-1 diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice), and the lows of the hypoglycemia.

I loved this novel. It was well-written and kept my interest. There are some really really scary things and sad stories. Some of it made me think about my own life, especially relating to children. There is also stories about people who have persevered and live life to the fullest. Highly recommended read for all.

Another Step ...

... the Globe and Mail has an article, "Stem Cells Stop Diabetes in Mice". The article outlines a breakthrough (although in mice) about stem cells being used to create new beta cells (the cells that are needed to produce insulin).

Why is this good? With stem cells, they are cells without an identity and apparently can form any cells in the body, including beta cells (those insulin generating ones). Up until now, they haven't been able to transplant stem cells and have them survive in a new mouse (I guess in this case), without the damaging autoimmune suppressing drugs. Ie. drugs that block the immune system from working properly. These drugs are usually necessary in transplants so the immune system doesn't go and kill off the new organ or cells. This is important because if the body can generate its own beta cells from the stem cells, there will be no rejection and no bad drugs.

Why is this isn't so good? Again, its with mice. Mice and humans are different. Also, this is NOT a cure. This is a long-term stop gap. Ie. so I don't have to jab myself in the gut 4 times a day. I may be able to just get a transplant once every 5 years or something like that. A true cure for type-1 diabetes, would be to eliminate the autoimmune attack. Once that has been eliminated, I'm sure that the body can just regenerate its own beta cells ... maybe. If not, then this technology would be needed to assist the body in the beta cell replacement.

How do you get diabetes? ...

... This has been a question that a lot of people have been asking me. I want make sure that everyone knows what causes someone to get diabetes. I have touched upon it in a previous post. But here is the straight answer.

You cannot *get* diabetes or be *infected* with diabetes. So, touching someone with diabetes or getting intimate with someone will not cause you to get diabetes. Scientists have learned that type-1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body is attacking itself. Type-2 diabetes is not an autoimmune disease. They body becomes less sensitive to insulin - ie. the body builds up sort of an insulin resistance.

So, what actually causes it? There is some sort of genetics involved here for both types. If someone close to you (grandparent, parent or sibling), there is a greater chance that you may develop diabetes then someone who does not have anyone close to them with diabetes. Furthermore, we know that its not purely genetic because only 40% of identical twins BOTH have diabetes. If it was a genetic disorder, then both twins all of the time would have diabetes.

For type-1 diabetes, the second factor that is needed is what is called an environmental factor. Something needs to trigger the 'genetic defect' to attack the body. Usually its some sort of infection that will awake the immune system to attack the body.

For type-2 diabetes, a poor diet and sedimentary lifestyle seems to act as a catalyst for type-2 diabetes. I'm actually not sure what causes the body to become less sensitive to insulin. When the body becomes less sensitive, it needs to create more insulin to process the same amount of carbohydrates. There are people who aren't overweight or obese that have type-2 diabetes; however, almost all of them are over the age of 60. You normally do not find someone in good shape who has type-2 diabetes who is under 40.

What doesn't cause diabetes?
For type-1 diabetics, lifestyle does not matter. There is nothing that people can do to avoid getting type-1 diabetes. For type-2 diabetes, lifestyle can help the body become more sensitive to insulin (losing weight and exercise). But again, really you probably can only delay the onset to your later years.

Side note, I just want to say that sugar does NOT cause diabetes. I believe they reason why is people hear, 'elevated blood sugars'. Sugar equals sweets! So, sweets must cause it. Saying sweets and candy causes diabetes is like saying, eating too much bread or pasta will cause diabetes. Bread, pasta and sweets all have to same effect on blood sugar levels.

Terminology ...

... surrounding the different types of diabetes. Many people have said to me, because you are so old when you got diabetes, it must be adult onset diabetes. This is yet another misconception or it is mostly mislabeled. Yes, I was an adult when I was diagnosed with diabetes; however, its not type-2 or adult onset diabetes. I have type-1 diabetes.

There are 3 types of diabetes.

Type-1 (formerly called juvenile onset) also known as insulin dependent. This form of diabetes is far more serious then the other types. Mainly because before the discovery of insulin, people would only have a few months to live. The body has lost the ability to create insulin. The reason why type-1 diabetes was called juvenile onset diabetes because no more then 10 years ago, if you were diagnosed with diabetes younger then 20, it was type-1. This type cannot be managed solely by diet, exercise and weight loss. People must take insulin injections (hence insulin dependent). There is not a 'typical' looking type-1 diabetic, they could be anyone.

Type-2 (formerly call adult onset) also known as non-insulin dependent. This form of diabetes is far more prevalent - it makes up 90% to 95% of all diabetics. When you read that there are millions of people out there that don't know they have diabetes, they are mostly referring to this type, as if they were type-1s, they would be dead with in months (see above). This form of diabetes can managed with diet, exercise and weight loss. Insulin sensitizers are often prescribed (Metformin is an example). However, as type-2 diabetics have the disease for longer and longer, it usually becomes necessary for them to have to start to take insulin (in combination with sensitizers) as the insulin sensitizers become less and less effective over time. A typical type-2 diabetic is older (45+), overweight (or obese) and lead a sedimentary lifestyle. Since most type-2s are older, it was dubbed "adult onset". However, the scary part is that because of the American sedimentary lifestyle, younger and younger people are being diagnosed.

Gestational Diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs only in pregnant women. It is similar to type-2 diabetes, where the women can manage it through diet. Usually women who are overweight or obese are diagnosed with this type of diabetes. After pregnancy, blood glucose levels usually return to normal levels. It should be noted that, women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes have a higher chance of developing type-2 diabetes later in life.

Book Review: The Little Diabetes Book You Need to Read

I was looking around on the Internet and checking out various blogs (which I will get around to posting my favourites) for books that maybe of interest to me about diabetes. In one of the sites, I came across this book by Michael A. Weiss & Martha M. Funnell "The Little Diabetes Book You Need to Read".

I really liked this book. Of course, coming from reading Berenstein's book where he is a doctor on a high horse, almost anything would have sounded more sympathic. The book opens up with a brief introduction on how the book will help you. Then it goes into the usual what is diabetes is, what caused it, and what not. It essentially outlines how you can be successful in managing this disease or condition (whatever you want to call it).

I liked this book because it essentially says that everyone is different in how they manage their diabetes. What works for one person doesn't always work for someone else (unlike Berenstien's book). They start to refer to diabetes and YOUR diabetes. Its not someone's else, because you are basically in charge of your own care. The doctors, specialists, educators and dietitians can give you the tools and advice for you. But ultimately you are the one who is responsible for how much or little you follow the advice.

The book isn't just for diabetics but there are sections at the end of each chapter for loved ones or people who care for diabetics to read. Again, its about the person who has the disease and how they deal with things. Some people can get really frustrated if their s/o constantly asks how is your blood sugar? Or nags and says, "You can't eat that ..." Other people may thrive on such demands by their loved ones, I don't. Again, its all about who you are.

I really enjoyed it and provided steps for an 'action plan' to manage your diabetes. It uses a lot of sports references in the development of the action plan, learning your enemy (diabetes), knowing your teammates (specialist, doctorb, dietitian and loved ones) and developing a plan (daily testing [glucose monitor], yearly testing [blood tests, eye exams, foot exams, etc ...]). It tries to make the disease more of an ongoing experiment on what works for you and what doesn't. Change plan, experiment, check results and tweak plan.

Character ...

... As I was writing up my next book review, I had thought of what this disease or condition has done to me. I realize it shows the true character of someone. What they are made of and how much they can take. People react differently to their situation (sort of the basis of the book). Some people ignore and don't care about tight blood sugar control. They deal with the complications as they come up. Others do want to stay healthy because the complications are so scary that they don't want to burden others. It also has shown who truly cares for you. These people give you the time and space when you need it. They give you an ear when you need to talk to someone. They truly care for you. These are the people that I cannot let down. I feel if I don't get my body under control, then I will have let these people down. I cannot fail. I will not fail.

Diabetes has also showed that I have a blinding hope. Blinding hope that they will find a cure soon. Hope has been sky high ever since they've discovered insulin - and that was 80 years ago. For 80 years, people have said that a cure has been just around the corner. For 80 years, people's hopes have been raised and dashed. A new treatment here and there that cures diabetes in some animal - now just apply it to humans, never happens. Some people cannot take anymore; others continue to believe. I will believe, I have to believe, its the only way that I can keep on giving myself injections because I really hate needles. But with the light at the end of the tunnel, I know that I have one less injection I need to give myself.

If they invent the 'hypospray' from Star Trek ... that's a different story.

Book Review: The Diabetes Solution

Here is my first book review. It also is one of the first books I've read on the subject of diabetes. Its "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars" by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein.

Dr. Bernstein is a bit of a jerk. He preaches an Aiken's style diet. Actually, its more like Aiken's diet times 10. 30 carbs per day. That's it. That's all you get. Here is a list of things you cannot eat: Sweets (including "sugar-free" ones that contain sugar alcohols), Sweet & Starchy Veggies (beans, beets, carrots, corn, onions, potatoes, tomatoes), ALL fruits, ALL fruit & veggie juices, milk, yogurt (except plain), anything with flour in it, rice, pasta, cereal and a ton of commerically prepared food. That's quite the list. When I first read it, I looked in my cupboard and saw virtually nothing that I could even eat according to his diet. What is left? Meat, cheese, some veggies here and there. Now that is SOME diet.

One thing I do like about this book is the information contained in it. There is so much information on various common ailments for diabetics that I haven't really seen in any other book. He devotes a full chapter to 'Delayed Stomach Emptying', chapters on different type of insulin regimens, and what to discuss with your diabetes specialist and family doctor, what tests need to be done to ensure you are healthy and why things are happening to you.

Overall, I liked this book for the information it contained about diabetes and its affects on the human body. (Given that it was one of the first books I've read about diabetes, most of my information came from the Interweb). However, I didn't like the tone of the book. It seems he feels he is better then you and everyone should be in this diet and if you cannot do it, you aren't as good as he is. Good for information about what diabetes is and what is does to you. Bad for advice on how to control your blood sugars.

Misinformation ...

... this story piqued my interest this morning "Can Sugar Substitutes Make You Fat?". Mainly because I have been using artificial sweeteners to sweeten my coffee and I have been drinking diet sodas. On the advice of my dietitian and diabetes educator.

Overall the story is pretty sound; however, near the end of the story the reporter writes, "Excess sugar in the diet can lead to diabetes and heart disease, even independent of its effect on weight. " Excess sugar DOES NOT lead to type-1 diabetes. I also believe that it is not the direct cause of type-2 diabetes either. If you eat a gallon of sugar, you will not get diabetes.

For type-1 diabetes, it is a combination of genetics and an environmental trigger that causes it. The trigger could be several things, most probable would have been an infection.

For type-2 diabetes, it more of the years of a sedimentary lifestyle. Which would cause weight gain. Young people (under 45) who are type-2 diabetic are obese and overweight. Thus it becomes more difficult for the body to be as 'sensitive' to the insulin it releases. Hence, doctors will prescribe insulin sensitizers. Its not the sugar that is causing the diabetes. The biggest thing is that not everyone who is overweight or obese has type-2 diabetes. So, there must be some sort of genetic disposition that also must present. Again, like type-1, its probably genetics and an environmental trigger that causes the body to be less sensitive to insulin. The weight gain could just be a catalyst (but I'm not a scientist, so don't take the last comment as truth).

Mythbuster ...

... I figure I'll start a new label to dis spell any myths about diabetes. Most of them will be in reference to the type-1 diabetes.

In recent days, I have started to let people know that I'm diabetic. They usually have several good questions and a lot of preconceived ideas about this condition. So, I figure I would attempt to correct them in subsequent posts. I believe I may have touched upon some of these myths in previous posts. But I'd like to re-enforce them.

I've also been doing a lot of reading. There is a ton of information about diabetes out there and I probably haven't even scratched the surface. I'll probably end up doing some sort of book reviews in the upcoming days, if I don't feel lazy ... or ill (I have a bit of a cold).

Neighbours Down South ...

... Yesterday Mitt Romney suspended his campaign bid for the nomination for the Republican Party, essentially handing the Republican nomination to John McCain.

[Quick Note: For those who don't really know me, I sort of have a liking to politics. It intrigues me. I certainly am a right-wing Conservative when it comes to finances. However, when it comes to the social issues, I am certainly not right-wing.]

So the Republican nomination is of great interest to me. Actually U.S. politics is of great interest to me. Because they are our largest trading partner we have to watch and see who the American elect and what kind of person s/he is and where s/he is going to lead the country. Just look at what George W. Bush has done in the like 8 years.

I'm happy that Romney suspended his campaign. I'm a big John McCain fan and I believe that he will do America a lot of good. On the Democrat side of things, Barak Obama and Hilary Clinton continue to duke it out. It is my belief that there will NOT be a 'dream ticket' of Obama and Clinton or vice versa.

Here are my predictions.
I think that if Clinton wins the Democrat nomination. McCain will manage to be elected President. For the last 20 years (5 terms), the White House has had a Bush or a Clinton in it. America truly needs a change and I believe people will truly see that.

If Obama wins, he will become the next President. It comes down to change yet again. McCain is a 4-term Senator and has been in Washington for quite some time. Obama has been a Senator for 1-term. He is also very charismatic and has the ability to truly captivate a crowd. He would be an excellent leader.

No matter what there will be something good that comes out of this ... George W. Bush will no longer be President.

Doctorb Day ...

... I've pretty much caught you up on everything that has been happening with regards to diabetes. I've been still reading a bunch of things and I'll probably start ranting about some of the annoyances I've found.

Today was DoctorB today! Three appointments. One with the diabetic specialist, one with a diabetes educator (registered nurse) and one with a dietitian. I was pretty lucky about the diabetic specialist. Especially since I'm a type-1 diabetic and I absolutely NEED insulin injections. In my previous post, I really wanted to try to get away with diet management alone; however that is not possible.

The unfortunate part of the health care system is that people cannot get absolute immediate attention. It would have been nice to meet the diabetic specialist the next day after I was initially diagnosed so then I could actually get started on the insulin regimen. However, that wasn't possible. It took about 3 weeks for me to finally get an appointment with the specialist.

Diabetic Specialist:
We chatted for a little bit. He sort of scared me when he said that the Metformin that I was taking cause side effects like liver and kidney failure. He told me its impossible for me to control it through my diet alone and I was probably in a *honeymoon phase* with my diabetes - which I suspected. He also mentioned that I could actually go for a second opinion, but I'm fairly confident that he was correct in his assessment. Especially since I've read ALOT of literature about diabetes in the last 3 weeks. He wrote out a prescription for two types of insulin. A basal insulin and rapid or fast-acting insulin. I will explain what they are later. He wrote out instructions for my dosages - X units 3 times a day before meals and X units once a day. He examined my feet and told me I had to see the eye doctorb every year starting now. Then he gave me a free insulin pen - its the Novus Junior pen.

Diabetic Educator:
This was about an hour long session. There was a little mix up in that they believed that I was a type-2 diabetic since I was prescribed Metformin. Apparently, type-1 individuals need to have a longer session because of their insulin injections. Thank you Mr. Walk-in Clinic DoctorB. Luckily I had just seen the specialist and he had just given me my prescription for the insulin. I showed the educator the paper that had the doses for my insulin. Once that was sorted out, we sat down and discussed various aspects of diabetes. Diet, meals, low blood sugar, exercise and alcohol were all discussed in-depth. If you know me, I really really like beer ... alot. I haven't had a drop of alcohol since I was diagnosed.

Dietitian
Again, there was the mix-up with the type-1 and type-2 diabetes with the dietitian. She pretty much said to me, I didn't think you would be type-2 since you are underweight and pretty young ... finally someone called me young :) Anyways, she asked me to describe how I eat. Its actually pretty tough when you think about. Eating is usually something that most people just do without any regard for anything - it just happens. So, I attempted to say how I eat. I usually just graze at my desk all day and that I didn't have set meal times, I would just 'eat'. After that she looked over what I like to eat and when. She said that there wasn't really anything wrong with my diet and that we won't be counting any calories because I could really stand to use to gain some weight (Believe me, I've tried ... and failed). She outlined a pretty easy to follow diet plan with real numbers for carbs. Something that I wanted since I was first diagnosed.

That was my day. Full of medical people and talking. There was a ton of information. I'm sure I'll probably share the bulk of it over the next few posts or so.

Changes ...

... So as a stop gap I have been given Metfomin to take 3 times a day with food. Hopefully this would be the way I can control my blood sugars. I believe this is a little over optimistic since I'm a type 1 diabetes (ie. just look at me, I'm 1.65 m (5'4"-ish) and weigh about 53 kg (~120 lbs). That's underweight. Plus I'm only 29 and I'm reasonably active. The Metformin (from what I've read is only for people who are type-2). Who knows what the doctorb prescribed me.

So, I have reduced my carbohydrate intake by at least 50% (by doctorb's orders) and my blood sugar readings have stabilized from 5.5 to 9.0. This though may just be the *honeymoon phase* [definition: Its the period of time shortly after someone with is diagnosed with type-1 diabetes where there is some magical restoration of insulin production by the pancreas. However, this is only TEMPORARY and does not mean I'm magically curing or reversing my diabetes]. I'm not a doctorb or specialist or educator, so I don't really know. Its been tough and I've been eating a lot of salad ("You don't make friends with salad").

Its been a little overwhelming with all of the reading that I've done. I've looked at several websites and started to look at diabetes books. Here is a list of websites that I've been reading:
The Canadian Diabetes Association [http://www.diabetes.ca}
The American Diabetes Association [http://www.diabetes.com]
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation [http://www.jdrf.org/]
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (Canada) [http://www.jdrf.ca]

There are a few people that have been great to me over the past few weeks in helping handling this condition.
Crystal, my girlfriend. She has been a steady as a rock and source of alot of my strength through this. I don't know where I would be without her support. My boss at work. He has given me all of the leeway to ensure that I can get healthy again. He doesn't just see me as another employee but truly cares for my well-being. Colin, a co-worker who has always been there for me. Always has an ear for me to talk to him. Thanks all.

Follow up ...

I found myself back at the walk-in clinic. The doctorB armed with the results from my blood work. We looked through them together. Generally I was in good health. My *good* cholesterol was excellent and the rest of the blood looked good. He pointed out my A1C levels were pretty high (~11.0) and my blood sugar levels were pretty terrible (~16.0). He was impressed and surprised that I was feeling so well.

We discussed what the next step would be, which was to make an appointment with a diabetes educator and dietitian. Unfortunately, their 'scheduling' system was down and they could not make an appointment until the following business day. They will call me back to arrange an appointment. When I got the call from the diabetes centre, the earliest appointment would be February 5th - so I have to wait.

The doctorb in the meanwhile prescribed me Metformin and 200 test strips and lancets and gave me a few more tidbits of information and off I went. Without any in-depth knowledge on of what I needed to do or what was to come. I went off to Shoppers Drug Mart to fill the prescriptions and get a blood-glucose monitor.

Life Changing ...

The next few posts are going to sound more like a little novel as I've needed time to reflect and look back on what has happened over the last few weeks ...

Earlier this year, I finally went to the doctorb [the B stands for bargain] to get my blood work done. I just went to the local walk-in clinic. There was nothing in particular wrong with me. I mysteriously lost 5 pounds. My resting heart rate is around 80 to 90 beats per minute (which wasn't really a cause for alarm, but I was a little concerned about it). Occasionally I would have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the washroom but I figure that would be because I kept on drinking so much juice (Lemonade, McCain's Orange Punch, etc ...). Also, I would usually take a daily 10 to 15 minute nap at my desk at work. I figure because I would be up late the previous night. I would find out the real answer to this conditions.

So, the doctorb went through a quick examination. Checked my heart rate, blood pressure and what not. He was a little concerned about diabetes with my family history. He agreed that I needed to get my blood work done, so filled out a form and then instructed me to go to a lab in the morning. I went to the blood analysis lab in the morning and they took several vials of blood and I got to pee in a cup.

A few days later while waiting for a table at Morty's the doctorb called me and said, "You better watch your carbohydrate intake. You've tested positive [for diabetes]."

The Dream is Dead ...

Star Trek XI ... it was supposed to be awesome. Matt Damon cast as a young Capt. Kirk, with Ben Affleck at his side as Spock. Cuba Gooding Jr. cast as McCoy. It would have been glorious. But today I found out the dream is dead. Zachary Quinto has been cast as the new Spock ... and they is no word on the new Kirk or McCoy.

Might as well call the move Star Trek XI: The Dead Dream.

Why I Work at BestBuy ...

Many people have asked me why I work at BestBuy instead of Futureshop. There is a Futureshop right in Waterloo; but I chose to drive 20 minutes to work at BestBuy. What compelled me to work there

The Globe and Mail's recent article, "Best Buy's two-step begins to click" says it all: "Attracts more women customers [than Futureshop]."

'nuff said.

Knee Jerk Reactions ...

... a big topic in today's world right now is the environment. Al Gore's very successful documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth about global warming as really brought it to the forefront. Politicians everywhere are jumping on the bandwagon to show they are pro-environment.

This post is really about two issues. First, the Conservatives' green plan ... and the banning and recommended use of CFL (compact fluorescent lights).

The other day, the Tories released their green plan to meet the Kyoto accord ... 8 years late. Critics of the plan say, its doesn't go far enough or quickly enough. Some of the critics include Greenpeace and other environmental groups. Others are the opposition parties ... of course. In this case, the Liberals. The Liberals have NO basis for these attacks. What would they do if they were in power? Probably the same thing ... or maybe nothing at all. Knowing the Liberals.

One of the biggest critics is Al Gore himself. Mr. Environmental. Well, Mr. Environment, as Environment Minister John Baird, never brought a vote on the Kyoto accord to the Senate floor. Mr. Environment did nothing to help the environment while in power. He had 8 years to prove it. Again all of what Mr. Baird pointed out.

My second problem is the knee jerk reactions of politicians. Remember, adjusting day light savings time to save energy? Well, guess what, it didn't. Energy consumption is pretty much the same as if we didn't change our clocks. Another 'environmental' or 'energy' saving plan is to ban incandescent lightbulbs. On the surface, its good. Heck its great! People will save a couple of bucks per year per light bulb. But what about the replacement bulbs out there? Well, the most likely replacement is going to be CFLs. These CFLs actually contain mercury. As I found out in a news story (I think it was on the CBC), that if you break one, you need to get it professionally cleaned, which could cost you thousands of dollars. Furthermore, how many people actually know that it contains mercury? And how to properly dispose of them? Most people will throw them into their house waste which in turn will take them to the landfill. Great, now we have mercury in our landfills (again). For what? To save the country a few bucks a year. The worst part about this is that even environmentalists are supporting the use of CFLs. So, what is worse? Mercury poisoning or using extra energy (or having a higher energy bill)? For me, its having a higher energy bill - since I was unaware of the mercury contain of those bulbs. I'm now looking for alternative solutions for my mercury filled bulbs.

It just seems that everything that comes out that's supposed to be good turns out out worse. I just feel like any time that I try to save the world or help myself, I end up doing it a whole lot worse.

So screw it, I'm going to buy a big old SUV and drive the the 1 km to work eating a cruller filled with trans fatty acids and wrapped with meat from a cow, pig and chicken while I have a cigarette. All that while at home I'll leave my air conditioner and incandescent light bulbs on 24/7.

What Crap ...

It seems that I cannot seem to update more then once a month. Quick summary.

February's get into work before 9 month was a moderate success. Out of the 20 days that I needed to be into work, I managed to get in before 9 12 times. The other 8 times break down as follows:
  • 4 times <>
  • 2 times <>
  • 2 times > 1 hour late
So, I'd say its pretty good. Considering that some of those 4 times was when there were some terrible road conditions.

March is no refined sugar month. I've pretty much gave up on Wednesday considering that I've pretty much run out of food and I don't have to time to go shopping. However, it was pretty good. Other than a few hiccups ... like a couple of Sundays where I felt terrible from being hung over, I was good. Some good came out of it, I'm going to have honey in my tea instead of sugar.

My hamster passed away a few weeks ago. He was about 2.5 years old and I think had a good life. I miss him. I think I'll get another one one day. But not any time soon.

Right now, I just want to get through the next week or so. Hopefully, things will finally calm down. But I doubt it.
